Bad Hobbits Die Hard
Here we are in Halifax. After waiting several agonizing days, I’m finally back online so I can stop going out and start spending all my time on MSN again.
I spent a lot of time with Kendall, Kristine and Mike’s frosh group this week, mostly due to the lack of internet but also because I haven’t seen these people all summer. It’s only recently become clear how completely and utterly insane I was feeling without people around. Now that the Radical Bay crew, Erin and Rory and the rest of them are around again, it feels quite nice to emerge from the proverbial dark cave and step into the light again. But not TOO much light — I do have a reputation to keep.
Anyway, spending time with the frosh reminded me of my own frosh week. Right after orientation on the first day, everyone goes to a beer and pizza party at an area house. Last year’s was much like this year’s — a bunch of people get drunk off one beer, while others kind of stand around and make nervous conversation with one another. I sat on a couch with Ari and Rory, I think, and did the latter. My most vivid memory, however, is some upper year guy wearing a trucker hat and with copious amounts of facial hair running up to me and going “HEY, WHAT’S YOUR NAME?”
At that point in my life, I was still in my “I hate everybody” stage, but I was trying to make a go of being friendly, so I told him my name. I doubt he heard it, but that didn’t stop him from continuing with a “HEY YOU DRINK BEER?” I type his dialogue in all caps as its the only way I can think to indicate that he sounded like John Goodman on both crack and meth at the exact same time. Regardless, I replied by holding up my plastic cup full of beer to show him that, yes, indeed, I do drink beer.
“YOU SMOKE POT?” he continued. I replied with a “No, not really.” He looked at me like an English student looking at a Calculus problem and then said “YOU’LL START.” He then turned to his friend beside him and told said friend that he just met a “COOL MOTHERFUCKER.”
Then he left and I never saw him again.
Everything after that made up probably one of the most fun years of my life. It’s funny how things start, isn’t it?
