Smiling and lagging
The intrepid photographer, Halifax-born Justin “I think his last name is” Davey sent along a batch of the pictures he took from my trip to York last week, and I once again have to reiterate just how much better they are than the crap I take. Now, I’m sure some of it is the fact that I use a $180 glorified webcam with a crooked viewfinder while Justin uses a thousand-dollar-plus piece of electronic equipment, but still, he tends to concern himself with things like “lighting” and “composition” while my train of thought when taking a picture starts and stops with “Haha, look how drunk that guy is.” So rest assured that this set is probably the most artistic set of photographs you will ever see on this website.
Some highlights!
- We’ve all often wondered what John William would look like were we to surprise him with a very large camera with a very bright flash shoved right into his face. I like to think he would kind of look like this.
- I knew the night was going to be fun when Justin noticed an awesome looking arrow on the side of a building. So of course we had to pull over and take a picture of said arrow, which happened to be on the side of a strip club. Bonus behind the scenes footage: Here is a picture of Justin TAKING this picture! Mind-boggling!
- It is my newest contention that nothing looks cooler than a picture of a bunch of lights taken from a car going very fast. Seriously, It just looks awesome.
- John William is very shy and hates being photographed.
- Here you can see my feet. I believe I am on the very right. This shot took fourteen takes, as I was lagging. I pretend like I’m cool with it, that the thought of being a lagger doesn’t bother me, but often, when I think no one’s looking, I break down and cry.
- Justin thought he’d get a picture of this limo, but was not expecting the limo’s window to open and reveal this. It looks like several mid-life crises decided to spend their Thursday Night out on the town. I find it kind of amusing that the word “Open” is reflected in the window, considering the state of the women in the car. But maybe that’s just me.
- My glamour shot. I kept smiling. I couldn’t help it. It was funny that we were in downtown Toronto at 2 a.m. on a Thursday Night taking pictures!
- Our dark alley. We spent a long time here, as Justin took crazy pictures of twisted metal bars and climbed up on ledges. We did not encounter any trouble, but I still have to say this was probably the most harrowing experience of my admittedly sad life.
View them all! They’re really good. If you would like larger resolution copies or perhaps hard copies of any of these photos, please send Justin a lot of money. I’m sure that will work. For now, enjoy these small electronic copies!
Thanks again, Justin, and if you ever show up my picture-taking again I swear to god I will hunt you down and skewer you with various rusty implements and beat you with a barrage of bizarrely-shaped rocks. I am the supreme picture taker around these parts, son.
