What is going ON?!
Oh dear lord, they’ve made a Joe Schmo 2! How is it that I didn’t know about this until I saw the commercials on Spike TV? For those who aren’t familiar, the first Joe Schmo was a twisted version of a reality show where every contestant but one was an actor portraying a certain reality show stereotype. It was brilliant, rivetting and hilarious stuff as every week they’d push the envelope a little more and we’d wonder when Matt (the mark) would realize the ruse. Fortunately, Matt proved to be about as naive as Crocodile Dundee and thus didn’t figure things out until the last episode, when they finally just up and told him.
This second installment seems pretty interesting! It’s a take off on dating reality shows this time, so there are TWO people — a young couple — who think this is a real show, while the rest of the cast remains actors. A cool thing is the return of Ralph Garman, the host from the first edition, playing a blonde-haired British guy this time around. An unbelievably awesome thing is the casting of Mr. JONOVISION himself Jonathan Torrens as the “Gotta-Be-Gay Guy!” Dear lord, he’s going to make all of Canada so very proud!
I see that my disdain for Ace the Batdog has led to some angry readers! It also has led to some links to some awesome websites devoted to the Saturday morning cartoon “Dog City”, which was really a great show. Man, they were breaking the fourth wall left and right on that show! That’s like heady theatrical stuff! There’s nothing I love better than fourth wall breaking. Maybe later I’ll write some Dog City fanfiction in which the artist’s creation convinces the artist that he too is merely a fictional character because, dude, dogs can’t talk.
Regardless, in response to some people’s claims that Ace the Batdog had any relative merit, I’d like to post the following image:

Take that!

I’m going to assume this is an illustration of what happens when the Justice League catches a nasty dose of the clap or something… anyway, touche
I was expecting that to be from The Golden Age: Uncensored, but I think it’s real. Awesome!
PS: I wish his bio mentioned that he did “Jonovision” or “Street Cents” rather than “Canada Day”, which really isn’t a show at all. It’s a day. Blah. I wasn’t too huge a fan of the original, but I’m starved for TV right now, so I will likely watch it, Canadian Idol and Amazing Race all summer.
PPS: Did I ever tell you I met Jono? At the Radio Shack in Moncton at Champlain Mall. I think it was in grade 9. It was kind of humbling. He bought a cordless phone.
Oh, it’s totally real. It defines how bad Batman got in the 1960s and 1970s before finally being saved by Frank Miller. They did a goddamned isssue where Batman, Robin and Superman play BASEBALL, for christ’s sake.
I never met Jono, but I did see him at a great distance once. He came to my school as some sort of publicity stunt to hand out some free tickets to his show. I was hungry so I went to get to lunch. A bunch of my friends DID meet him and actually ended up ON the show (asking questions to people who had joined the military or something), though.
I was pretty disappointed when I heard Torrens was on Trailer Park Boys. Partly because I just don’t GET that show, and partly because, dude, you had your own talkshow! A small part in a comedy is a stepdown!

‘Two Stupid Dogs’ was the epitome of dog cartoon shows breaking the motherfucking fourth wall (one episode, a dog played on ‘The Price is Right’ for chrissake), but it probably only aired on some crappy American station.
