Picture Week: The Kitchen New Year’s
There’s not a lot to say about New Year’s. I wish I had hilarious captions for these photos, but honestly I was working really hard on a bottle — a whole bottle — of rum that night and thus I didn’t take any of these. I don’t know who did. And also I feel bad because I forget the names of some of the people in them.
We spent the evening at Jeremy Patterson’s house and I have to say that it was one of the best New Year’s I have ever had! Far better than that one New Year’s Eve I spent in a basement playing Secret of Mana 2 for four hours. Or that time I spent it reformatting my computer and reinstalling Windows. Though the latter was totally awesome because it made my computer bitchin’ fast.
I actually don’t want to write much about the goings-on because I feel too many words would take away from the utter majesty present in these pictures:
Don’t those pictures just SPEAK to you? Do they not scream words like friendship? Or good times? Or tune in Thursday at 8 for madcap antics starring this cast of characters? Jesus, if it wasn’t 3 a.m. I’d photoshop one of these shots into a fake ad. I like them THAT much. I love how, in the second one, it’s like the guys are totally in on a hilarious joke that the girls just don’t get. And I love how, in both of them, we are all dressed slightly differently, but not differently enough that we all seem trendy and “with it” and youthful!
The rest of the pictures in this series are not as effective at SPEAKING. A few of them do invoke friendship, but generally they just say drunkenness. And a surprising number of them say blurriness. This one, I think, says vampirism. Others say surprise, vegetables and very appropriate hats.
I don’t know what this one says.
Hours into the year 2006, everyone just sort of fell over. It was a remarkable precursor to the theme of this year. Which is falling over. And torrid sexual affairs. But not at the same time.

I, too, spent this New Year’s in a kitchen. It was pretty standard except the next day we discovered that we had eaten two pounds of shrimp. And we had managed to listen to “Rebel Rebel” by David Bowie on repeat for four hours.
And that’s a nice rack.
I, alas, spent very little of my new years in a kitchen. Usually I do! Honest!
