I have never heard Portugese before, to my knowledge, so I thought they were speaking some kind of Spanish-Russian hybrid. That was the first thing I thought of when they told him to do that. Maybe part of their 'good-guy' agenda is whipping Hurley into shape by making walk back and forth across the island a lot. I really liked this episode though. Salvaged the season significantly for me. Though my opinion may be a bit twisted because my favourite part of the whole episode was the statue. Now every time I imagine the island, I'm going to imagine it being overlooked at one time by a 100-foot tall, four-toed stone man. Makes me smile every time.
