Pictures: Our new apartment
As promised, some pictures of the new apartment Erin and I moved into just over a month ago are now available in the photography section.

| Where we live. People say it’s a tough neighbourhood, but clearly they have no idea just how tough I am. |
I sort of did this in order. First, we have the outside of the house. It’s an attached townhouse, apparently built circa 1880. Though that window on the right is in fact ours — you can tell because there’s an action figure of a character from the television series Reboot on the window sill — the door in the photograph actually belongs to our upstairs neighbours. Our front entrance is through the basement, giving the whole thing a bit of a cavelike feel.
From the front door, you have the option of either turning left or pausing to look at yourself in a full-length mirror. You can also hang your coat up in a handy closet, though that is not pictured.
From there, you enter our living room which is quite spacious and has room for two couches and my awesome TV which is normally not quite so blurry. At the back of the living room, still on the lower level, is our bathroom, which is unspectacular. Behind it, there’s an even more unspectacular laundry/storage/furnace room, but I did not photograph that as it is kind of creepy.
Going upstairs, we come across our dining room/second living area. In it, there’s one of my favourite features of the apartment, a big hole overlooking the downstairs level. It may not seem like an overly useful thing to have in an apartment, but big holes are great for transporting furniture and, also, yelling at people without having to walk down stairs first.
To the immediate right of the hole is our guest room & office which is currently more of a “storage area.” Once we get a desk, this room will start to take shape. As is, it’s been a handy place to put stuff we have no other room for currently. Continue past the kitchen and we get to our bedroom. I really should have opened the blinds before I took this picture. Here’s a nicer angle.
Out the back door we have a nice back porch where we can barbecue and, also, look at my car in its parking space.
And that’s the tour. There will now be a short opportunity for Q&A.

Happy Thanksgiving — judging from the pictures, you have a lot to be thankful for.
Anyways, on to questions (these are the questions I ask myself before moving into a place): how safe is it? Does it have its own laundry? How easy is it to find food/drink/videogames? Do you have any ghosts? When will you host the housewarming?
Hey, thanks! We just got back from a great Thanksgiving at the cottage. I hope yours was good, too!
It is very safe. It’s admittedly not in the most ritzy neighbourhood in T.O., but there’s nothing scary about it — there’s just a lot of construction sites and a couple of homeless shelters around. It’s only the people who think of everything east of Yonge Street as a warzone that tend to act surprised when I tell them where I live.
We do have laundry! It’s in the storage room off the bathroom. It is free, which is a much welcomed change from my last place where I was constantly feeding coins into the machine. We’re literally ten minutes from the heart of downtown, so it’s incredibly easy to find food, drink and video games. When we want to expand our horizons, the subway can take us anywhere we want to go.
No ghosts so far! There’s a dog that lives in the apartment upstairs that gets kind of crazy every now and then, but I am pretty sure he is not any kind of ghost dog.
Housewarming? Soon! Once we get a desk, I guess. It is still not quite a house yet.

Erin/Matt
The place looks great and very comfortable. I recognize the furniture. Erin has certainly stepped up from a homeless person. Her dad looked a few pictures from your trip and made the homeless look comment….just thought I would pass it on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Enjoy the apartment. I hope to make a visit in the new year.
Erin’s Mom
Thanks, Wendy Balser! Erin would definitely probably be a homeless person if not for me. We finally got the spare room set up today and clear of boxes, so the apartment is now completely livable. It’s an historic moment.
